Mishap at Oil Well Costs Life of Wichita Man

Leonard V. Lille, 32, Killed near Windom As Father Looks on

WINDOM, KAN., Jan 5--Leonard V. Lille, aged 32, of 612 North Broadview, Wichita, was killed today in an accident at the Bornholdt oil field southwest of here.

Lille, an oil operator, was with his father, Bert Lille, of 232 North Bleckley drive, when the accident occurred. According to the father, they were inspecting the field shortly after noon when his son got some oil on his hands. He reached to pick up a rag on a pumping platform, and was struck on the head by descending counter-balance on the pump.

According to Dr. A. E. Crawford, Rice county coroner, death was almost instantaneous. C. A. Patterson, sheriff of Rice county, said the elder Lille was alone in the field after the accident and was forced to summon aid from Lyons, county seat of Rice. The oil field is a short distance across the county line from Windom, a McPherson county town.

Lille was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Ellsworth, and had been a Wichita resident for six years. He graduated from Kansas State college in 1940, and was a member of the Presbyterian church in Ellsworth. During World war II he served as a corporal in the army.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Lille; daughter, Deidra Jean, and son, James L., of the home; his parents and grandmothers, Mrs. Augusta Henning, of the Commodore hotel, Wichita,

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Downing mortuary chapel. Other arrangements will be announced later.
