The son of Jonas Klinger & Sarah (Boyer) Kaufman, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Branch Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Dauphin County October 30, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 1 as a sergeant with Co. F, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 16, 1863.

He married Mary Catherine Heisler October 11, 1863, and fathered the children you see linked below. After living in an apartment on his family's homestead in Llewellyn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania for a short time, John and Mary purchased a property on East Pottsville Street in Wisconisco, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, where they raised their family and operated the John Kaufman General Store for the duration of his life. John also served as Post Master for this small community out of his store.

A member of Lykens' Heilner Post No. 232, G.A.R., he died at his home reportedly from meningitis of the brain.
