Originally from Portland, Maine Annie moved with her children from a prior marriage to South Carolina after meeting a chief petty officer named Michael Palaan. Although they seemed to get along well at first Annie began to become uneasy with Palaan's controlling nature. After several years of physical and verbal abuse Annie decided to leave Michael Palaan. Sometime between the sixth and seventh of November of nineteen eighty-nine Annie Tahan was beaten to death. Her body was found on the seventh of November and identified a few months later when a special agent for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service matched a photo of Annie with a sketch that had been created shortly after her disappearance. Five years later Michael Palaan was arrested and brought to court martial for the murder of Annie. Palaan is serving a thirty year sentence in a military stockade facility.
