Martha Heller, age 73, of Williston, passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston, surrounded by her family.
Martha Kaye Thompson was born August 24, 1939, in El Dorado, AR, to Eldon P. and Merle (Crain) Thompson. She was raised in McCurtain County, OK, before moving to North Dakota with her parents and two sisters, Barbara June and Susie. When her family relocated to Odessa, TX, she moved along with them. She was married a short time later to Christ Heller, Jr. in Hobbs, NM, on Sept 5th, 1956, and they returned to North Dakota. They made their home in Williston and raised their children there.
She was a hard worker and besides raising a large family, she worked at Jorgenson's Bait Shop for many years, and later served as the dispatcher for H&E Pipe Service and Heller Bros.
Martha's greatest pleasure in life came from spending time with her children and grandkids. She enjoyed many activities including cooking and baking, bowling, playing cards, camping and fishing, and supporting her family in whatever endeavor they chose. You never had to look very hard to find her at a sporting event because you could always hear her well before she could be seen. And she was never very far from a cold Dr. Pepper.
She was a very active and engaging person and took tremendous pride in the fact that everyone who entered her house was treated like one of her own. This included feeding, clothing, and the occasional discipline that came with being one of hers. She was an excellent cook that was quick to offer one of her cookies and some advice whether you wanted it or not. She shared her talents with many, and was especially fond of making Christmas care packages for the people of Bethel Home until her health would not allow her to continue.
She was a selfless person that put the needs of others before her own. She made great personal sacrifices to make sure that her children and many others were taken care of. She had six children, but helped raise dozens more. She would greet you with a smile and would make you feel like you were the most important person in the world. Her friendship and unconditional love will be missed by all that knew her.
Martha is survived by her sons, Greg Heller (Vicki), David Heller (Kaylene), Quentin Heller (Carrie), Kelly Heller, daughter Dolly Horob (Todd) of Williston and one daughter-in-law, Lauri Heller of Williston; grandchildren Jed (Heather), Mindy (Charlie) Miller, Onesti (Jason) Krieger, Ticinie (Dan) Weber, Christy (Derek) Fischer, Casey (Jen), Kayla (Eli) Williams, Brandee Heller (Shannon Sundhagen), Hailey, Boston, and Jana Horob, Denley, McCrae, and McConahae, Maci Marie; and 17 great-grandchildren; sisters June Stephenson and Susie Morehead; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Christ, and one son, Eldon.
Ma Heller will be remembered as a strong person who cared more for others than she ever did herself. Her legacy is one of kindness, caring, and genuine concern for others.
