Moses Taft was the youngest of ten children born to Willard Taft and Mary Mathewson. He married Sarah Darling Baldwin 24 Oct 1860 in Greenwich, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of David Baldwin and Julia E. Mathewson of McDonough, Chenango, New York. (Julia Mathewson's mother was Sarah Darling) They had children: David Baldwin Taft born 1861, Frank Elmer Taft born 1863, Mary Johna Taft born 1865 and Lydia Louisa Taft born 1868.

(His first wife was Joanna Gleason, she died just months after they married in 1854.)

Moses Taft was a double Mayflower Descendant from John Howland & Elizabeth Tilley.

David Baldwin Taft born 1861 and died 1865. He and his mother Sarah were in a Stage Coach accident in 1862. A large trunk fell on them. David never walked or talked.

Frank Elmer Taft born 15 Jun 1863 in Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island, he married Katie Thompson White and had children: George Allen Taft, Clarence Frank Taft and Mabel Ruth Taft. Frank Elmer Taft died 25 Jul 1942 in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa.

Mary Johna Taft born 16 Aug 1865 in Georgetown, Michigan. She married Raymond Phillips. They had no children. Mary Johna Taft died 17 Dec 1952 in Los Angeles, California.

Lydia Louisa Taft born 25 Jul 1868 in Covington, Dakota, Nebraska. She married first James Russell Ingram, they had children: Elmer Leroy Ingram and Lucy M. Ingram. She married second Frank S. Wynia, they had a daughter Mary Darling Wynia. Lydia Louisa Taft died 28 Oct 1953 in Post Falls, Kootenai, Idaho.

Moses Taft was a carpenter, hunter, trapper, builder. He fought Indians. He rode as a guard on the River Streamers from St. Louis, Missouri to Fort Benton, Montana. Went to Florida to help build the new town of Miami, Florida! (The camping pictures you see posted are Moses Taft in Miami, Florida.

Moses and Sarah had an 80 acre homestead in Correctionville, Woodbury, Iowa in 1869. They were burned out by Indians. They returned to Burrillville, Providence, Rhode Island. They later returned to Iowa after the Indian raids subsided.

Moses Taft was a cousin of President William Howard Taft.

This family line through Sarah Winsor goes back to Roger Williams who founded Rhode Island as a refuge from Religious persecution.
