On July 4, 1897, Eli was struck by lightning when a bolt hit a rail at the mine entrance and traveled over 1000 feet into the tunnel, stunning Eli and three other men. The first to regain consciousness, Eli suffered numbness in his left arm for a time but was otherwise fine, as were the other men.
Died from black lung, also called miner's asthma, at the home of his daughter.
