SUNSET - Wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend, Maurine Athay Trussel, 74, passed away on June 17, 2012 surrounded by her husband and three daughters.

She was born on March 15, 1938, in Paris, Idaho, where she grew up on a farm in a little white house that her parents owned. She was the daughter of Dallas Green Athay and Beulah LaPriel Hess Athay Eborn. Maurine graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, Idaho, as the Salutatorian. She attended Utah State University studying Home Economics.

Maurine married her eternal companion, Carl William Trussel, in the Logan LDS Temple on September 12, 1957. Their entertainment was dancing. Every week they would go to the Paris Pavilion or the Fish Haven Resort to dance. They lived most of their lives in Sunset raising four children; Toni (Fred) Bauman of Layton, UT; Jeffrey (Cindy) Trussel of Las Vegas, NV; Joy Trussel of Sunset, UT; and Nicole (Velden) Wardle of Riverdale, UT.

Religion was a priority in Maurine's life and was evident in the many callings in which she served within the LDS Church. She served in both Ward and Stake Young Women's Presidencies, Primary, and Relief Society. She was the Dance Director for both Stake and Ward groups. In addition to her church service, Maurine was active in the community. Maurine and Carl were Advisors to the first Sunset Youth City Council. They received the Sunset Citizens of the Year in 1995. Maurine served as the President for the League of Cities and was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, where she oversaw new memberships.

After working for the Internal Revenue Service as a supervisor for many years, Maurine retired and devoted more time to her interests. She loved crocheting, sewing, cooking, attending the opera, Broadway musicals, and family get-togethers. Maurine was a fabulous cook. Her family, neighbors, and friends delighted in eating her famous dishes. Maurine was a very charitable person who shared talents with others. She was continuously sending dinners to neighbors, giving away her handiwork, and making phone calls to check on family and friends.
Maurine is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, younger brother, Gilbert Athay, four children, 14 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and older sister, NaReese Welker.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Sunset Stake Center, 220 West 975 North, Sunset. A viewing for family and friends will be held Wednesday at Myers Roy Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday at the Church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.

Interment, Clinton City Cemetery.
