Rites Thursday for Soldier Who Died in Korea

The body of Sgt. Jack L. Vining, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald D. Vining, 1624 S. Clark St., who was killed Oct. 14 on Triangle Hill, Korea, will arrive in Muncie late Wednesday night from Hoboken, New Jersey.

It will be taken from the Piepho Funeral Home to the parents' residence where friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home by the Rev. Orval Moore, pastor of Normal City EUB Church, assisted by the Eagles Lodge. Burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery with military honors by Muncie Post 12, Amvets.

Sergeant Vining, a 1947 graduate of Central High School, worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company before entering service on Aug. 3, 1948. He was a member of the Muncie Eagles Lodge, Anderson Moose Lodge and Goodyear CIO local union.

Also surviving are two brothers, Don Thomas and Larry Lee, both of Muncie; one sister, Mrs. Eugene Estes of Muncie; and the grandparents, Mrs. Margaret Gurley Wilson and John Vining of Muncie.

"Sergeant Vining was a member of the 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on October 14, 1952. Sergeant Vining was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal."
