Born in Bryson City, N.C., to Ellis and Mae Waldroup, he moved to Hampton, V., in 1955. There he met his wife Juanita Strode and they were married 49 years.
Elmer served our country for two years in the Army and then went to work for the Hampton Fire Department serving 28 years until retiring in 1991 as a Lieutenant.
A member of the American Legion Post 48, Elmer enjoyed volunteering in their Hampton VA Medial Center bingo games. He was also a member of the Tidewater Bluegrass Association. He loved to hunt fish and work in the garden.
Mr. Waldroup is survived by his wife, Juanita; three children, Tammy Lynn Waldroup, Elmer Willard "Billy" Waldroup Jr., and wife Shannon, Rhonda Mitchell Holland and husband Kenny; grandchildren, Ginny Lewis and husband Terry, Sara Noack and husband Steve, Brooke Waldroup, Curtis Waldroup, Brett Holland; and a great-grandson, Mason Noack and a another great-grandchild, baby Lewis, due later this year; a brother, Eugene Waldroup and wife Linda.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Rebecca Reeves and three brothers.
He will be greatly missed but we know he is in Heaven with our Lord and Savior.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wayne C. Moore with interment to follow in Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
