Armand H. Bertrand, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Nativity, with his sons, the Rev. Armand J. Bertrand and the Rev. Mr. Jerry Bertrand and the Rev. Vernon Smith officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Bertrand was born July 19, 1920, in Jefferson, S.D., the son of Napoleon and Florence (Trudeau) Bertrand. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

He married Yvonne Demers on Sept. 17, 1945, in Jefferson, S.D. He had lived in Sioux City since 1945. He was a mechanic and welder for Iowa Public Service Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Church of the Nativity and Third Degree Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and working word puzzles. He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne; three children, the Rev. Armand J. Bertrand of Cherokee, Iowa, the Rev. Mr. Jerry Bertrand of Marcus, Iowa, and Jean Ann and her husband, Tom Singer of Adel, Iowa; and a grandson, Michael Singer of Adel. Other extended family include two sisters, Lucille Williamson of Gregory, S.D., and Leatta and her husband, Bill Fink of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers and their wives, Romeo and Dorothy Bertrand of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Rodney and Diane Bertrand of Sioux City; a family friend, the Rev. Vern Smith of Harvey, N.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Michael Singer, Dr. Frank Marino, Michael Marksbury, Bob Peterson, Merlin Henke and Douglas Backer.
