With her husband and nine children, they left Germany via the port of Bremen and came to the United States via the port of New Orleans where they landed on the 24th of May, 1850. Family history quoted at an early Best family reunion (around 1910) states that Heinrich died on the way over. It was said he was to be buried at "sea" but she pleaded with them to keep him until a proper burial was to be performed. The story quoted at that reunion states that he was buried somewhere around or in Memphis, Tennessee on the trip up the Mississippi river.
The families settled in Prairietown, Illinois and then left for Macoupin, Montgomery and other counties through the years.
Maria Christina Best died on the 23rd of March, 1859 and was buried in the Prairietown Cemetery in Madison County, Illinois.
