GREENVILLE — Mr. Josiah Hartwell Joe Dew, formerly of Lake City, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Rolling Green Village.
Mr. Dew was born in 1908 in Latta, a son of the late Duncan Mikell and Elizabeth Chappell Dew. A 1929 graduate of Furman University, he was a cotton and produce merchant in Lake City for 40 years. He was a trustee of Furman University, the Baptist Foundation and Connie Maxwell Childrens Home. He was honored with the Paul Harris Rotary Award and the Order of the Palmetto, which he and his wife received on the same date.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Marian Bethea Dew of Greenville; two daughters, Nancy D. Taylor and Joan D. (Mike) Kellett, both of Greenville; brother, James C. Dew of North Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Will Ashley of Columbia, Mo., Hart and Maaike Ashley of Atlanta; Marian Taylor of Charleston, Jay and Hala Taylor of Wilmington, N.C., Michael and Christine Kellett of Richmond, Va., Josh and Brandi Kellett of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Eden K. and Steve Martin of Greenville; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Betsy D. Ashley of Greenville, who died in 1978, and by five sisters and two brothers.

Burial will be private. A service celebrating his life will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, in Lake City First Baptist Church with visitation afterward at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613 or Lake City First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 820, Lake City, SC 29560.
