An excerpt from her grandson John Gass Ross' Civil War memories:
"Mother's mother, who lived with us, was very old, paralyzed, and confined to her bed. Mother put a few of our best clothing between the feather and straw bed on Grandmother's bed trying to save them. One night the bushwhackers or robbers threatened to take Grandmother out of her bed and take the bed. However, they did not do this.
