A.W. Schram, Originator of Convolute Spring for the Rocking Chairs, is Called by Death

A.W. Schram, originator of convolute spring for rocking chairs, died this morning at Sheboygan.

The veteran furniture man, who operated a factory in Oshkosh from 1902 to 1913 and then retired, only to go back into business again 15 years later at the age of 72, passed away after an extended illness.

Last May he left his home at 180 Cherry Avenue and moved to Sheboygan to live with a daughter, Mrs. J. E. Imig, and he died at her homeabout 4:30 a.m., today. He was 75 years old and had been in the furniture business almost 40 years.

Starting to work at Plymouth, Wis., as a wagonmaker, he became the first manufacturer of platform rockers in the Midwest. He began his factory in that city in 1888 and later moved it to Sheboygan Falls.

DEVELOPED NEW TYPE.

At Sheboygan Falls in 1896 he developed the idea of the convolute spring rocker from the old type platform rocker. Six years later he came to this city.

Mr. Schram remained at the head of the concern, which was known as the A. W. Schram & Sons Chair Company, until 1913 and then soldout. The firm continued under the same name until it moved from Oshkosh in 1915. In 1928 Mr. Schram again started the making of charirs in small quarters on Light Street. He bought the frames, fitted on the springs here, and shipped them out. After a year, two of his children took over the business and today it is at Sheboygan under the same name of the Schhram-Imig Rocker Company.

Mr. Schram was born in Sheboygan County, near Plymouth, Nov. 11, 1856. During his active years he took a great interest infast horses, and owned a number of racing animals.

WIFE DIED IN 1928.

Mrs. Schram died here Dec. 23, 1928. The survivors are four sons, O. H. Schram of Fond du Lac, A. M. Schram and W. F. Schram of Oshkosh, A. L. Schram of Milwaukee; a daughter, Mrs. Julia Imig, Sheboygan; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, A. H. Schhram of Merrill, Louis Schram of Plymouth, and E. C. Schram of Milwaukee; and one sister, Mrs. Gust Griesbach of Glenbeulah, Wis.

The body will be taken to Plymouth from Sheboygan.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Wittkopp funeral home at Plymouth, and burial will take placein the Sheboygan Cemetery.
