Genevieve (no middle name) Hurst was born on the Hurst family farm northwest of DeKalb (on the Old North Road) which her grandparents Armstead and Matilda Faris Hurst had pre-empted in 1843 and which subsequently became the home of her parents, William and Mollie (Martin) Hurst. Genevieve was the fourth of their six children. Her early education was at the Sleepy Hollow School, two miles south of the Hurst farm - where her mother had once taught, and where her father was president of the School Board.

Genevieve married Okley Earl Frakes in September 1920. Genevieve and Okley shared her mother's home, just south of the DeKalb School, for several decades. Okley died in 1961.

Geneiveve served as the Postmistress of the DeKalb, Missouri Post Office for 42 years, beginning in 1928 and retiring in 1970. Late in her service, a wind-swept fire destroyed half of the business district of DeKalb in the early 1960s, and totally destroyed the Post Office. Genevieve was very proud that not a single piece of mail was lost or destroyed in the fire and evacuation.

Following Okley's death, Genevieve moved to the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Nelson (Sonny) Eastbourn and their children Linda Sue and Gerald, southeast of DeKalb.

Daughter Mary Lou, born September 14, 1921, was Genevieve's only child. During and after World War II, however, Genevieve and her mother, Mollie Hurst, supported refugee families in England and France.

She was a lifelong member of the DeKalb Christian Church and her memorial service was held there.
