After an illness of two weeks, Capt. Joseph T. Oliphant answered final taps this morning at 5 o'clock at his home on east Cottage Grvoe avenue. Captain Oliphant was 78 years old, a member of the Methdoist church, G.A.R., and Masons. In the year 1862, he organized the 97th Ind. volunteers and entered the war. He made an excellent record for bravery and was one of the valuable officers of the Rebellin. He was engaged in several of the firecest fights and was wounded twice. He was wounded on the head soon after going to war but recvered and re-entered service. At the battle of Kenesaw Mounain 1864, was wounded in the leg and had to return to his home near Harrodsburg, where he run a general store. Later he moved to Bloomfield. He was a staunch Republican and was at one time recorder of Green cunty. The Captain moved here a year and a half ago.
A wife and five children survive him: W.T. and D.L. Oliphant, of Cainsville, Mo., F.M. Oliphant, of Harrodsburg, Mrs. F.M. Carmichael and Mrs. Grant Wilson, of Bloomfield. Three sisters also mourn his death; Mrs. Sarah Stone and Mrs. Riley Brinton of Dugger, and Mrs. Sarah Fitzjatrick, of Lintonn.
Funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 at the hourse in charge of Rev. Jones. Interrment at Rose Hill cemetery.
