Fred Wilhelm was born on 10 Dec 1873, 6 miles east of Tipton, IA. He was baptized on 17 May 1874. He attended rual schools in Lowden & Tipton. Fred was confirmed in the Evangelical & Reformed Church in Lowden in 1887 at the age of 14. In November 1898, Fred purchased what would become the "Butterbrodt Family Farm" from William Sager. In 1900, at age 27, he married Caroline "Lena" Conrad in Lowden, IA. Fred & Caroline had four children: Irwin H. (b: 24 Dec 1901, d: 12 Dec 1955), Alma L. (b: 16 Apr 1904, d: 31 Aug 1987), Milda (b: 07 May 1908, d: 1993), and Harlan Fredrick (b: 06 Aug 1914, d: 01 Feb 2000). In 1920, Fred went to work at the Bennett State Bank and farmed the family farm. In 1939, he & Caroline moved into a home in Tipton, IA. Fred retired as Director of the Bennett State Bank on 08 Jan 1953 after 33 years of faithful service. He died at age 79 on 23 Oct 1953 of a sudden heart attack while watching TV on the family farm. His youngest son, Harlan, purchased the farm from his siblings and farmed until his death in 2000. NOTE: The Butterbrodt family farm is located at 1682 210th Street, Tipton, IA. The farm was homesteaded by Bill H. Beard on June 15, 1853. Mr. Beard sold the farm to Mr. William Sager. In November 1898, Fred purchased the farm from Sager.
