Jose was born September 22, 1935, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, the son of Francisco R. Acosta and Maria (Esperanza) Olmeda. He married Alice Mary Green in February 1959 in Philadelphia, Pa. She preceded in death on September 26, 1976. He married Karen L. Callaway on November 20, 1970, in Moline. Jose graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and Temple University School of Medicine. He served in the U.S. Army.
Dr. Acosta retired as the Director of Laboratories from the former Illini Hospital, Silvis, Ill., after 42 years of service.
Dr. Acosta was a member of the College of American Pathology, American Medical Association, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Rock Island County Medical Society, Illinois State Medical Society and East Moline Rotary. He enjoyed reading, classical music and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; children, Francis (Karen) Acosta, Beaverton, Ore., Jose Acosta, Honolulu, Hawaii, Maria (Randy) Mitchell, Port Byron, Ill., Monica Acosta, Anchorage, Alaska, Anita (Brad) McKiernan, Parker, Colo., Julianne (Christopher) Rodriguez, Littleton, Colo., and Jennifer (Clarke) Anderson, Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
