Ed passed away unexpectedly and peacefully Sunday morning June 10, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born June 12, 1927 to adoring parents, Elmira and Joseph Cassilagio, in San Francisco. An only child, Ed was raised in the Excelsior district of the city. He was a lifetime member of the Amazon Boys Club where he looked forward to the monthly lunches with his many childhood friends. He attended Balboa High School, SF City College and San Francisco State College. Ed played basketball and baseball during high school and went on to play baseball during his college years.
He attained his teaching credential while at SF State and taught and coached at Denman Jr. High, Aptos Jr. High and for the majority of his career was a math teacher, Athletic Director and curriculum counselor at AP Giannini Jr. High. Ed was also a high school and college basketball referee for 45 years. During summer, he worked as a transportation dispatcher for Safeway in Richmond.
Ed's life passions were golfing, traveling, organizing yearly family vacations, reading mystery novels, dining with friends and family, appreciating music, and sitting in his recliner when he was unable to attend the games, watching his beloved 49ers and SF Giants. He also was a proud member of The Old Time Athletes, Old Time Baseball Association, San Francisco State Alumni, Balboa Buccaneers Alumni, St. Bartholomews Men's Club and The Elks Club.
He met the love of his life, Jeannie Young, on a train ride home on military leave and reassignment from the Naval Base in Memphis Tennessee during WWII. He was assigned to Shoemaker Naval Station in Livermore where he worked as a movie projectionist with his childhood and lifelong friend, Monte Hill. Madly in love with Jeannie, they married at Old St. Marys Catholic Church on April 7, 1951. They purchased their first house in the newly built Doelger home development in Westlake, Daly City in 1954. It is there that they raised their children, Susan and Gary with years of wonderful memories. Ed and Jeannie were founding members and very active in Our Lady of Mercy's Church and School. School functions, working Bingo, Parish Festivals, coaching OLM school sports, and Men's and Women's Club activities filled their life with wonderful friends!
In 1976 they moved to San Mateo and enjoyed the sunshine instead of the fog. Joining and participating in the friendly and spiritual St. Bartholomew's Parish, Ed religiously ushered at Sunday morning mass. He especially looked forward to playing in the Annual Parish Golf Tournament with his many friends. Ed was sadly predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years and our beautiful mother, Jeannie, in 2009. He is survived by his loving family: daughter, Sue Anderson, son in law, John Anderson, granddaughters, Christina Anderson and Julie Wouters, grandson in law, Justin Wouters. great grandchildren Evie, Tristan and Gianna Wouters, son, Gary Cassilagio, daughter in law Sonja Cassilagio, grandchildren, Michelle, Katie and Daniel Cassilagio.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dad's and Mom's caregiver, Ilaisanne Likiliki (Nane} for her years of love and dedication to our mom and dad. Nane was sent to us by God to care for our parents and she will always be a part of our family. Thank you also for Nane's friends and family who brightened Jeannie and Ed's days with their love, music and laughter including Nana Latu Halalilo and Antonio Vaitai.
Visitation services will be held on Friday, June 15 from 3-9pm with a Vigil Service and rosary at 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 16 at 11:30am at St. Bartholomew Church, 600 Columbia Drive, San Mateo. Interment immediately following at Skylawn Cemetery with a reception held at St Bartholomew Parish Center.
