Rose E. Elmegreen Chilton Times June 4, 1922

A very sad death was that of Mrs. George R. Elmegreen which occurred at her home in hyton on Saturday afternoon, May 28th, from disease of the liver from which she had been suffering for some time and which became serious some three weeks ago.

Rose Elizabeth Wintermeyer was born in the town of Newton, Manitowoc county, Oct 8, 1875. She was the daughter of August and Elizabeth Wintermeyer, who for many years were well known and highly respected resident of Manitowoc County. She spent her childhood and early maidenhood in Newtown and the city of Manitowoc, graduating from the Manitowoc west side High School in the class of 1892 with the highest honors, she being valedictorian of the class. Subsequently she took up additional work in the Colorado Springs High School where she specialized in several lines of study. She taught school in Manitowoc County for two years with marked success and was married on Dec. 22, 1896 to George R. Elmegreen. The young couple established their first home at Kiel, remaining there for several years and for the past eighteen years they have resided in Hayton where Mr. Elmegreen has held the position of station agent for the Milwaukee Road for years.

To this ideally happy family were born ten children, all of whom, with the bereaved husband, survive and mourn their loss, namely; Rueben E. Elmegreen of Sheboygan, Olive, Allan, Rosetta, Myrtle, Eugene, Lucille, Beatrice, Ruth and Thelma whom she inspired to worthy ambitions and lived to see the elder ones doing well. Rueben holds a permanent mercantile position at Sheboygan, Olive and Rosetta are successful teachers in Calumet County, and the other members of the family are at home. She also leaves one grandchild, Lester Elmegreen, son of Rueben, her aged mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Wintermeyer and a sister, Miss Emma Wintermeyer, both of Denver, Colo., and who arrived at the bereaved home on May 28th. She also leaves three brothers, Dr. John Wintermeyer and Julius Wintermeyer of Denver, Oscar Wintermeyer of Elizabeth, Colo., and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Vogelsang of Denver and Mrs. Nels Nelson of Watkins, Colo.

In addition to her immediate family she is sadly mourned by many relatives and by a host of friends in this and Manitowoc Counties who recognized her many sterling qualities of heart and mind. Her devoted motherhood made an indelible impression upon her sons and daughters, who with the bereaved husband will cherish and revere her memory.

During her last illness everything possible was done for her but is was apparent that the summons was only a question of a few days. Not only the bereaved family mourn her passing but friends innumerable and neighbors in her home town are saddened by her death. The funeral was held from the home, Rev. W. A Arpke of this city officiating with interment in the Breed cemetery.
