US Army WWII Major, Bronze Star Medal and OLC

OWENSVILLE — Aubrey M. Gordon, 86, died December 25, 2003, at Gibson General Hospital.

He was born May 2, 1917, in Owensville to the late Richard and Nancy (Higgenbotham) Gordon.

Aubrey graduated from Owensville High School in 1935. He joined the United States Army in 1940 as part of the 6th Infantry and Field Artillery. The events in World War II took him to the Pacific Theater in 1942, where he earned a Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster for service. He also was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Philippines Liberation Medal.

After returning home from the military, he was employed by the U. S. Postal Service and retired as Postmaster on Oct. 8, 1977. He also worked as a Certified Public Accountant in Owensville. He was a Past Master of Owensville Masonic Lodge #364 and was a member of Prince Masonic Lodge #231 in Princeton, Scottish Rite, American Legion Post #51, South Gibson VFW Post #2714 and served on the Owensville Cemetery Board.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Paul, Percy, Charles, Allen and James; and a sister, Anna Barrett.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Barbara Bingham Gordon; a daughter, Jane Ann Cunningham of Haubstadt; two grandsons, Blake and Chris Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at Owensville Cemetery, with military rites. Rev. Bernie Etienne will officiate.

There will be no services or visitation at Holder Funeral Home in Owensville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Owensville Cemetery.
