LEWIS,-On the 15th instant, JAMES LEWIS, late Major U. S. Marine Corps.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from the residence of Mrs. Ellis Lewis, No. 802 S. Fortieth street, this (Friday) afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Major Lewis, was a native of Pennsylvania. During the early part of his life he studied law and was appointed from civil life to second lieutenant. In 1856 he was stationed at the marine barracks in Philadelphia. During the following year he was aboard the steam frigate Wabash, of the Home Squadron barracks at Brooklyn, N. J., he returned to the barracks in Philadelphia, where he remained till ordered on board the St. Lawrence, of the Atlantic blockading squadron, in 1861, in July of which year 1862 and 1863 he was aboard the steam frigate Wabash,
the flag ship of the South-Atlantic blockading squadron. During the latter part of the war he was recruiting office in Philadelphia. He remained at the marine barracks till 1867, and during 1868 and 1869 he was stationed at the marine barracks, Portsmouth, N. H., being commissioned as major in the latter year. His latest service was at the Marine barracks in Norfolk, Va., but he has been home on
leave of absence since July last. He was a man whose many qualities endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends.
He was the son of Chief Justice Ellis Lewis.
