John attended and graduated from the Haskell Indian School in Lawrence, Kan. He was a professional boxer and the Missouri Valley welterweight champion prior to enlisting into the U.S. Army. He served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. After his military service he traveled extensively throughout the Southwestern United States, before retiring to the Odanah area in the 1970s. John worked many years in Tribal Administration and community service. He was a former Chairman and member of the Bad River Elderly Committee and the Bad River Tribal Council. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, music and being outdoors.
He is survived by his former wife, Bernice Arbuckle, Minneapolis, Minn.; four sons, Gerald (Kathy) LaPointe, Odanah; John Martin Arbuckle, Tularosa, N.M.; Joe (Janet) Spears, Rosemont, Mont., and John Leo Arbuckle, Minneapolis; one daughter, Mary Limbert, Carlsbad, N.M.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle (John) Maday and Muriel Arbuckle, both of Menomonee Falls; long time special friend, Bill Roundwind, Ashland; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Mary Goode; three brothers, Jerome, Aloysius, and Harold Arbuckle; and two sisters, Katherine Morrison and Bernadine Denomie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Odanah, with Fr. James Barteleme, O.F.M. officiating. Interment will be in the Odanah Cemetery.
