Birchdale Past & Present:
John Coope was born February 15, 1885 in Kansas to John Coupe and Mary Sperling Coupe, of Russian decent. He was one of eleven children and spent most of his younger years in Kansas. His siblings were: Cornelius, Eva, Maggie, Mary, Henry, Lizzie, Sarah, Bertha, Anna and Susan. The family moved to North Dakota shortly before 1900.

In 1923, John married Jennie Louise Cook in Edgeley, ND. John and Jennie drove an unbroken team of horses to Williams, MN where they lived for the first years of their marriage. Their children, Cecelia Henrietta and John Robert (Bob) were born in Williams.

Then the couple moved to a homestead started by Jennie in the Bankton, MN area. In Bankton, they had a cozy, two-room log cabin, a barn, and a shop. To earn a living, John would return to the Dakotas during the harvest season and Jennie churned butter to sell in town, packing it in small "Red Wing" pots.

The Great Depression of 1929 left John and Jennie destitute and they lost all their liquid assets. Their children, Helen Marie and Annabelle Mae were born during this time.

In the spring of 1936, the family moved to Border, MN, in Koochiching County, as part of a government resettlement program. The Coope children attended elementary school at Border and high school at Indus, MN. John and Jennie lived on the Border farm for the remainder of their lives.

Jennie had contracted rheumatic fever as a child, which damaged her heart. She died in 1942. John continued to raise his children on the farm and lived to see all his daughters marry. When he died in 1963, he was buried in the Riverdale Cemetery in Border beside Jennie.
