Lawrence William Ethridge was born July 13, 1929, in Urbana, the son of Elmer Macklin Ethridge and Bessie (Shaw) Ethridge. He died May 24, 2008, at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, at the age of 78 years, 10 month and 11 days.
He grew up and attended school in Urbana and graduated from Urbana High School. He was a lifelong farmer and was considered a jack-of-all-trades. Many people knew him as Dr.
He was united in marriage with Gayle Hart at the home of the Rev. Hodges in Louisburg on May 31, 1948.
He always provided for his family and would work any job to put food on the table. Some of these jobs included mechanic for Raytown schools, truck driver and a dairy in California. He worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway and many area dams.
He was a devoted father and grandfather, a very good brother and was always willing to help out a neighbor or friend in need.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Douglas Ethridge; and one brother, Carl Eugene Ethridge.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle, of the home; one son, Gordon Ethridge, Urbana; one daughter, Gayla Ethridge-Obley, Kansas City; two brothers: Leonard L. Ethridge, Raymore, and Kenneth D. Ethridge, Poteau, Okla.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a special friend, Ronnie Henderson; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends who will all miss him.
