James Henry DeWitt was born about 1830 in Orange County, New York, the son of James and Susan DeWitt. He was baptized with some of his siblings (Hannah Jane, Samuel, Alexander, & Charles) on August 1, 1840 at First Presbyterian Church of Hamptonburgh (now Campbell Hall), Orange County, New York. He married Frances Amelia Stephens, daughter of John and Elizabeth "Betsey" Stephens, at the same church on March 3, 1859. (He May have been previously married, as a daughter Julia A. DeWitt, age 4, appears with James and Frances in the 1860 Census of Wallkill, Middletown, Orange County, New York.)
James enlisted January 16, 1864 at Newburgh and mustered in as a Private to Company B of the 26th United States Colored Infantry on February 27, 1864. He mustered out with the Regiment August 28, 1865 in South Carolina.
