Diarist. During her life, Anne Lister wrote a five-million-word diary. The diary gives an excellent depiction of social, political and economic events of the early 1800s. It also includes passages written in a code she devised to detail her affairs with various women of the time including Anne Walker to whom she considered herself married. She is often referred to as the first modern lesbian. In 2011, her diary was added to the register of the UNESCO Memory of the World program. She is said to have had a masculine appearance and adopted many male characteristics. She was very athletic, wore black (a male fashion at the time) and managed her own estate which included property, shares in the canal and railway industries, mining, and stone quarries. Her life story has been told in the HBO series, "Gentleman Jack."
