Melton's son, Bob Crawford of Turlock, CA, provided the following biography via email on 8/30/2012:

"Melton Crawford was born in Porterville, California and raised in various locales in Los Angeles County, eventually settling in Manhattan Beach. He graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1935. He worked for 38 years as a lineman, foreman and then supervisor for Pacific Telephone Company, his service only broken by World War II.

During the war he served in the 5th Air Force, 22nd Bomb Group, 408th Bomb Squadron, flying as a bombardier in B-25 and later B-24 bombers in the South Pacific. He entered combat after training Stateside in Townsville, Australia and flew 79 combat missions in New Guinea, inland hopping and in the Philippines totaling nearly 600 combat hours in the next 2.5 years. Eventually he was promoted to Group Bombardier for the 22nd and left the service in July 1945 as a Captain.

After the war, he returned to PacTel, retiring to Paradise, CA in 1975.

A lifelong outdoorsman, he was a senior trap shooting champion and member of the Elks Club. He was married to Roberta Fletcher Crawford for 47 years, separated only by his death."
