Married to Sarah Ann Susan McKinney on January 23, 1851 in Lawrence county, AL.

Enlisted in the Confederate Alabama 32nd regiment , Company I - Infantry, on February 12, 1863.
Was shot in the Battle at Jackson, MS on May 13, 1863 over control of Vicksburg. He was trying to hold off the Union forces so the town could be evacuated before the Union set the town on fire. He was sent to a hospital in Jackson, Ms. By July, he was back with his unit. He participated in all the battles of Chickamauga at Chattanooga, Tennessee in August and September of 1863.
On November 25, 1863, he was captured at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga and became a POW - Prisoner of War.
He was sent to Rock Island, Illinois to the prison that wasn't even completely built in the dead of winter - arriving on December 9, 1863.
There was an outbreak of smallpox. There was pneumonia and diarrhea running through the camp the week that he died.
He died on January 10, 1864.
He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Rock Island, Illinois.
