Harriet had married John Tranter 28 February 1848 at the Berrow Parish Church, Berrow, Worcestershire, England, where her family had resided all their lives.
Their first son, Thomas, was born 28 December that year at Linton, Herefordshire which was the homeland of her husband. Their second son was also born there 21 February 1850; they named him James. It is not known if they lost any infants in England during the next six years.
They immigrated to America in 1856, along with John's parents and John's 18 year old nephew, John Clutterbuck.
They stayed for a while in New York and then settled in Johnson County Iowa, where an infant son and daughter were born and died within the next two years.
