CAR AND TRACTOR COLLIDE, KILLING ROWAN RESIDENT ~ By Gail Smith, Staff Writer

SALISBURY - A 75-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning when a car collided with the tractor he was driving. John Brown Caldwell of Mount Ulla in Western Rowan County was thrown off the tractor before it rolled over him, said Trooper D. H. Robinson of the state Highway Patrol. The accident happened on N.C. 150, about eight miles west of Salisbury. Robinson said the tractor was going east near Fannie Sloan Road and was attempting to make a left turn into a private driveway. At the same time, a 1987 Acura came over a hill and started to pass, Robinson said. The driver of the Acura, Dennis Austin, 42, of Salisbury, said Caldwell did not give a hand signal to show he was about to turn, Robinson Said. Robinson said the accident happened in a dangerous spot, just past a hill. He said it's possible that Caldwell checked for traffic before he turned the slow-moving tractor, but didn't see the Acura coming because it was still below the crest of the hill. Austin was traveling at the speed limit of 55 mph, Robinson said. He was not injured. Caldwell, who suffered major head and body injuries, died at the scene, Robinson said. No charges were filed.
