Evan Hunter died of pancreatic cancer in Staten Island, N.Y. He was 71.

The native of Cedar City, Utah, lived in San Francisco, :Daily City, and Concord before moving to Willits in 1989.

Hobbies: Electromechanical gadgets and improvements (electric car, for example), rock hound and lapidary, Boy Scouts

Survivors: Wife of 46 years, Madelyn; daughter, Constance Yvonne Jensen of Ashton, Idaho; sons, Stevan Gaurdello Hunter of Fort Collins, Colo., Scott Evan Hunter of Brookings, Ore., and Shawn David Hunter of Corvallis, Ore.; father, Gaurdello Lunt Hunter; mother, Mae Sullivan Hunter; sisters, Renae Holland, Reane Stallings, Sandra Barton and Sharon Walters, all of Utah; and 20 grandchildren. A daughter, Kerry Lee Hunter, died previously.
