JOHN H. SCHAEFER
(1860 - 1934)

South Side Butcher Meets With Most Painful Injuries
John Schaeffer, the popular butcher, whose shop is on the corner of South Fourteenth and Washington street met with a peculiar and very painful accident Thursday morning. He was cutting up beef and as is the custom gave a quarter a mighty swing in order to impale it upon one of the hooks, protruding from the wall. In doing so however he miscalculated, his hand slipped and the sharp point of a lower hook entered at the elbow of his right arm, and penetrating the arm, came out on the inner side. In an agony of pain the butcher wrenched his limb free and with some assistance bandaged it and went to a physician. The injured man showed remarkable grit, and if blood poison does not set in, will probably recover the use of the arm. It has been found necessary to use solutions on the wound in order to mitigate the excruciating pain.

J.H. SCHAEFER, MEAT MARKET OPERATOR, DIES
73-Year-Old Retired Business Man Will Be Buried On Tuesday Afternoon

John H. Schaefer, retired cattle buyer and meat market operator, died suddenly this morning at his home 1011 South 14th street. He was 73.

Mr. Schaefer although not in the best of health for the past two weeks had been about and only Thursday made a trip downtown in his car. Last night he retired as usual after tending the furnace and doing other chores about the house. He was taken ill during the night with convulsions. A stroke followed and he died at 9 a.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. from the home and at 2 p.m. from the First German Evangelical Lutheran church. He and his wife have been (photo) active members of the church since their marriage 52 years ago. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery.

The deceased, who was known to three generations of farm folks and city residents, had been living a retired life since he quit the retail meat business here 14 years ago.

Mr. Schaefer was born in Grossmoor, Hessen, Germany 73 years ago and came to America at the age of 17 years, spending a year with an aunt at Milwaukee before arriving in Manitowoc. For two years before establishing his own market at Washington and South 14th street he was employed at the old Lowe market. In 1882 he was married at Branch to Miss Dora Ellermann and they took up their residence in rooms adjoining the meat market.

Mrs. Schaefer assisted her husband in the conduct of the business and Mr. Schaefer made trips into the country on cattle buying trips. Many times he labored during the day in his shop and made long trips into the country at night to purchase cattle.

For a 40-year span Mr. Schaefer continued to operate the market and then disposed of it to Oscar Belinske. On July 30, 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Schaefer were joined by their children at the home on South 14th street in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.

Survivors are the widow; five daughters, Mrs. Bertha Krause, city, Miss Ida Schaefer, Sheboygan, Mrs. F.C. Proehl, Milwaukee, Mrs. Edward Nitz, Racine, and Mrs. Lydia Kitchener, Chicago; and two sons, the Rev. William Schaefer of Milwaukee and George Schaefer of Sheboygan.

The body is to be removed to the home Monday morning from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home.
