Walter Bennett was the son of John Ross and Mary Jane Sturgis Bennett of Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina. As a small boy of five, his family moved to Houston County, Texas (about 1881) and settled out on the Hall's Bluff Road in Crockett. Several other relatives from South Carolina soon followed.

Walter married Margaret Jane LaRue in Crockett, Houston County, Texas on December 26, 1899. They had three children: Evy, Earle and Joe.
Walter became a successful grocery merchant and managed his own store, "Bennett's Grocery", on Crockett's west side.

As a widower, Walter lived with his daughter Evy and her husband in Crockett after his beloved Jane died in 1946.
He died in 1950 at the age of 74 years and six months and is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery next to his beloved Jane.
