CHESTERFIELD - Edward Benjamin Bartlebaugh, 91, of Chesterfield died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at his home.
He was born Aug. 11, 1908, in Alton, the son of Silas and Minnie Utoga Bartlebaugh. He married Edna V. Cameron in 1932 in Alton; she died in 1997.
Mr. Bartlebaugh was a member of Brighton Christian Church and worked at Children's Christian Homes. He had graduated from Alton High School and Johnson Bible College in Kimberlin, Tenn.
Survivors: several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Keller Cemetery in Chesterfield, the Rev. Randy Huitt and the Rev. Steve Revisky officiating. Memorial services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Brighton Christian Church. Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Chesterfield is in charge of arrangements.
Col. Thomas B. Bishop, retired
SPRINGFIELD - Col. Thomas B. Bishop, retired, 75, of Springfield, formerly of Litchfield, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at St. John's Hospice.
He was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Gillespie, the son of Walter L. Sr. and Mary Burke Bishop. He married Anne H. Holderread in 1945 in Alexandria, La.
Col. Bishop served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He enlisted in 1943 and retired in 1982. He was commissioned second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 and promoted to full colonel in 1966. He commanded Hv Mort Company, 130 Infantry Regiment, 44 Infantry Division upon entry to federal active duty from Litchfield in 1952. He served as an aerial navigator of B-17s and B-29s during World War II and as company commander and S-3 (plans and operations) of the 223 Infantry Regiment in Combat in Korea. He was chairman of the United States Property and Fiscal Officers, NGB, Pentagon, for six years. He established and was first commandant of the Illinois Officer Candidate School.
Col. Bishop was a graduate of Litchfield Community High School and several Army and Air Force schools. He received a bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston in 1974 and a master's degree from the University of Illinois at Springfield (Sangamon State University) in 1976.
Col. Bishop received several medals and awards, including: NGB Eagle Award, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal Military Medal of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal VI, Long and Honorable Service Ribbon II and also earned expert badges in Pistol Cal .45, M-I Rifle, Carbine, 4.2 Mortar and Machine Gun.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 236 in Litchfield for more than 50 years; Ansar Shrine in Springfield; American Legion Post 436 in Litchfield for more than 50 years, also serving as past commander; a life member of The Retired Officer Association; a 32 Degree Mason in the Valley of Springfield and a life member of the Litchfield Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former member of VFW, Oakcrest Country Club and the Officers Club of Scott Air Force Base. He was also a IHSA Basketball referee for 12 years.
Survivors: wife, Anne; two daughters, Barbara (husband, Richard) Long of Chatham and Beth (husband, Steve) Bishop-Perrigo of Franklin, Wis.; two sons, Thomas B. (wife, Michelle) Bishop Jr. of Boulder, Colo., and James M. Bishop of Pasadena, Calif.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Robey of Litchfield, Mary Lou Pitman of Auburn and Judith Strohmeyer of Montana; a brother, Charles W. Bishop of Litchfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: 9 a.m. Saturday, Staab Funeral Home, the Rev. Donald Meehling officiating. Burial: Camp Butler National Cemetery.
