He was educated in local schools. On March 16, 1942 he enlisted in the Army as a semiskilled lineman and serviceman. On November 21, he enlisted in the AF (predecessor of U.S. Air Force)
On November 22, 1942 he married Elizabeth Whiting. They had two daughters and a son. Their son, Vincent, died four hours after birth.
Robert remained in the AF until January 26, 1947, During WW2 he rose to the position of Captain.
He returned to White Sulphur Springs around 1948 where he became a partner with his brother John in the Rainbow Lumber Company.
He was active in Civic affairs of the town. He re-enlisted on February 7, 1951 (KoreanWar) and was released the following year on December 10, 1952.
By 1954 he was living in Hot Springs, Virginia. He died March 9, 1984.
He was cremated.
