DEATH CALLS WILBUR C. READ

Wilbur C. Read, prominent farmer of the Sand Ridge community, Pella township, died at his home last Friday morning, May 22, following a brief illness of pneumonia.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal church of this place, by the Rev. George Shepherd, his pastor, assisted by Rev. W.D. Benjamin of Onarga. At this service Monday afternoon the following obituary was read.

Wilbur C. Read was born Nov. 8, 1884 in Pella Township, Ford County, Ill., the youngest son of Arby D. Read and Mary Elizabeth Read. On June 24, 1920 he was married to Miss Marie Stevens of Cullom. There were born to that union three children, Ruth Marie age 10; Wilbur Wayne age 7; Robert Glen age 2 years, all of whom with the widow are left to mourn his untimely death.

Wilbur was a student of Eureka College and University of Illinois, where he fitted himself for his life's work. He lived and died on Glen Auburn farm as the Read homestead is known, where he was an outstanding figure in the farm life of his community. He is survived by his parents, one brother and three sisters, Melvin Read, Danforth, Ill., Mrs. Thomas E. Kirby, Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Fred Doht, Normal, Ill., and Mrs. Robert Reid of Bartlesville, Okla. Two sisters, Mrs. Russell M. Striplin of Atlanta, Ga. and Dora May, who died in infancy and one brother, Edwin who died at the age of nine, preceded him in death. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Sand Ridge; Piper Lodge No. 608 A.F. & A.M.; St. Paul Commandery No. 34 of Fairbury and the Mohammed Shrine of Peoria.

Wilbur Read's life of rectitude and integrity in business dealings, his loyalty to the church of his choice, and his charity to his fellow-man will always stand as a monument to his memory. He was a kind and loving husband, an indulgent father, an affectionate and considerate son, a devoted brother and a true friend. The community is grief-stricken over his sudden demise." Following the services at the church the funeral cortege, led by an escort of Knights Templar from St. Paul's Commandery of Fairbury proceeded to Brenton cemetery, where with Masonic ceremonies by Piper Lodge No. 608 A.F. & A.M. the body was laid to rest. Six nephews, Arby, Edwin, Theodore, Donald, and David Read and Russell Striplin acted as pall bearers.
