J.H. Collette, one of the prominent residents of Lake Charles, dropped dead on Kirby street. His death was due to the rupture of a blood vessel in his throat and life was extinct within a couple of minutes after he fell.
Mr. Collette was on his way to his home on Iris street when death overtook him. He had left his place of business on Ryan street when the store closed at 6 o'clock. When opposite the Central Fire Station he staggered and fell to the sidewalk bleeding profusely from the mouth and nose. Dr. Kreeger was across the street and ran to his assistance. He was dead almost as soon as he reached him. The remains were taken to his home at 640 Iris street. He was born in Camborn, Cornwall, England, Sep. 21, 1843. He came to America on a prospecting tour in 1872, leaving his family in England. He spent time in Colorado and Arizona and returned to England. In 1885 he brought his family to America, settling in Pennsylvania and in 1891 moved to Lake Charles. He was engaged in the mercantile business and for the past 9 years has been the head of grocery firm Collette & Son.
Mr. Collette was married in England in 1868 to Miss Emily Gay and was the father of 3 children; Joseph H. Collette, Edith L. wife of H.G. Reimers and Wilfred Collette. His wife and 2 of his children survive him, his eldest son, Joseph, died about 6 months ago.
