RESIDENT OF ULYSSES FOR TWENTY YEARS PASSES AWAY
(Mrs. Mary Kelly)
Mrs. Mary Kelly, a resident of Ulysses for the past twenty years, died at her home here on Friday morning Dec. 2nd, after an illness of short duration, death being due to heart trouble.
After she had received the last sacraments of the church, and all of her children had been home to visit her, she was ready to go, when the angel of death came for her. Her pastor had called to see her on Friday morning, and, it was while he and her daughters were kneeling in prayer, that she passed peacefully away.
Mary McGowen was born at Zanesville, Ohio, on July 27th, 1854.
With her parents, brothers and sisters, she moved to Bloomington, Ill. in 1865. While there, she was united in marriage to Hugh Kelly, in 1873.
In 1884, she moved with her husband and four older children to Nebraska, and settled on a farm four miles south of Ulysses. While on the farm, two of their children passed away. Later, they came to Ulysses, where the family have since resided.
The elder daughter, Katherine, passed away in 1912, and the husband and father, in 1923. The children surviving her are: Mary and Nora at home; Mrs. Nellie Adams of Peru, Nebraska; Mrs. Susie Rasche of Lincoln, Mrs. Julia Geiger and Mrs. Lucy Rohren both of Utica. She also leaves to mourn her demise two brothers, George McGowen of Greeley, Nebr., and James McGowen, Schuyler, Nebr., and one sister, Mrs. Susan Gibb, Ulysses, and a host of friends and other relatives.
Deceased was a sincere Catholic, ever ready to do her share in church activities. She was an affectionate mother, a kind and helpful neighbor and friend. She will be sadly missed in her home, her church and her neighborhood.
Funeral rites for Mrs. Kelly, were conducted at the Ulysses Catholic Church, on Monday morning Dec. 5th., the Rev. Father Loughran, offering the Requiem Mass, for the repose of her soul.
The choir sang Requiem High Mass and Mr. John Powers sang the Hymn to the "Sacred Heart" with Mrs. E. A. Dosek at the pipe organ.
The pall-bearers were all nephews of the deceased: Dr. McGowen of Schuyler, Nebraska, Hugh Kelly, John McGowen, Dan Kelly, George Gibb, and George McGowen all of Ulysses.
The funeral was largely attended by friends; and a large number of relatives from a distance. A profusion of floral expressions bespoke the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was made in the Ulysses Catholic Cemetery.
