Some more History of Newspaper Co in town Southern Yorman Democratic 1860 by CC Coulter but abolished by Union Forces in 1864 when they took the territory from its Confederate majority. 1869 to arly 1900's the Jackson Purchase newspaper published by A C Caperton was paper in area then sold to EK Warren in 1870 the resold to Beaumont Family 15 years later. The purchase name was changed to the Mayfield Mirror which bounced form owner to owner til 1905 when NP Bonney bought the paper and started Mayfield Sentinel. That died soon after. Banner of Temperance began in 1873 changing its name to Mayfield Monitor 2 years later. by founders BF Briggs and VO Watson. 1904 paper sold to WK Wall switched to daily format stopped publishing in 1907. Mayfield Leader was started but out by 1880. 1900 3 local newspapers had come and gone and Mayfield Democratic began 1894 by Erve Johnson he sold to R C Wright in 1896 who turned weekly to daily he then sold to J D Watson who reverted back to weekly and name changed to Mayfield Item. then sold to Percy Randolph and ended the Mayfield Item paper endo fo 20th Century,. 1916 Mayfield Times semi weekly Owners Gayle Robbins and Johnson(who started the Democrat) they sold to Bert Berry in 1918 to daily paper in competition with the 18 yr old Messenger. 1923 Messenger Scott Lemon bought the Times and merged it with the Messenger to form present day paper. Messenger sold 2 years later to George J Covington Sr who appointed George Bingham as new editor.Bingham was widely known humorist . Paper was a success . 1937. Frank O Evens purchased Messenger with Alton Hamlet and Nathan Yates as editors. . 1957 Ray Edwards was named publisher representing 2 family owned paper. Jess Alerson was editor . 10 years later Walt Apperson became publisher. 1979 Messenger moved form West Broadway to North 8th Street . Lolly Edwards took over the Messenger after her husbands death 1982. Haskell family of Virgina secured control in the 1980's and Bob Shytle was publisher until he retired in 1994. Eric Hoffman took the helm as the papers general manager and publisher in 1995. Article Coming Home 1998
