DONNA - Doris Malone Stewart Skilbred, 81, passed away June 4, 2012 at her residence in Donna. Doris was born in Weir, Mississippi on April 9, 1931 to Alton H. and Sarrah Taylor Malone. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters, Marjorie Louise Malone and Mildred Ann Jones; brother in law, John Cortino Jr.; and nephew, Vincent Cortino.
Doris and her family moved to the Valley at the age of 8 and settled in the Delta Area. She graduated from Mercedes High School in 1949. In 1952, she married Gerald Stewart who preceded her in death in 1983. Doris was a longtime employee of Knapp Sherrill Canning Co. of Donna with over 35 years of faithful service. In 1987, she married Darwin Skilbred, who also preceded her in death in 2004. She was also the owner and manager of the Mesquite Haven R.V. Park in Donna.
Survivors include her stepson, John David Skilbred of Las Vegas, NV; her sisters, Dorthea Gilbert of Waco, TX, Jeanette Cortino of Pharr, TX and Barbara (Ron) Morgan of Gilmer, TX; her brother, Warren (Beverly) Malone of Red Oak, TX; 6 nieces; and 5 nephews.
Visitation was held Friday, June 8, 2012 at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco. Graveside services and interment were held on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 10am at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
