He was a son of Benjamin and Abigail Hunt, born in Little Compton, R. I., June 12, 1813. When very young he came to New Bedford and in a short time found a position as clerk, in the employ of Henry Taber. Mr. Taber was quick to recognize the young man's sterling good sense and qualities, and soon admitted him to partnership, together with his son William Taber, the firm being changed to Henry Taber & Company.
