Son of Lt John Sill.
With his wife Elizabeth he had two sons, William Nicoll and John Lee.
A graduate of Yale College in 1775, he entered the Continental army in 1776 as part of the Connecticut 8th Regiment and was present with the army at King's Bridge and Valley Forge.
After the war he studied law in the office of Col. Aaron Burr and started his practice in Albany.

The Sill family is extensively documented in the book Genealogy of the descendants of John Sill by Rev. G.G. Sill.
