In 1885, Niels and Maren and the two girls immigrated to America, settling in Iowa. Two brothers were born to the family while they lived in Iowa (Johannes Emanuel in 1887 and Ole Franklin in 1893 - he later changed his name to Franklin Ole). Soon after, the family moved to Ruskin, Nuckolls County, Nebraska.

The Nuckolls County Marriage Index Book #3, p. 533, lists, Olga C. M. Knudsen and Niels Christian Mickelsen acquired a marriage license on January 25, 1900.
