Timur Avtandilovich Apakidze was born on march 4, 1954 in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR. He completed flight training in 1975 at the Yeyskoye Flight Academy. Apakidze served in the Soviet Naval Aviation element of the Soviet Baltic Fleet gaining reputation as one of its best test pilots from 1975 to 1983. Apakidze headed a battle group centred around the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov after 1983. Timur Apakidze was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation on August 17, 1995. In 2000, Apakidze was appointed deputy commander of naval aviation and promoted to the rank of major general. About a year later, Apakidze died when his plane crashed during an air show on July 17, 2001.
