Grigory Yakovlevich Baklanov was born September 11, 1923 in Voronezh, USSR. He served in the Red Army. For his efforts in the war, he recieved the Order of the Red Star and the Order of the Great Patriotic War, First Class. He graduated in 1951 from the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. After his publication of An Inch of Land in 1959, brought him to international fame. He published a book about his former classmates in 1979 entitled Forever Nineteen. From 1986 to 1993, Baklanov was the main editor of the literary magazine Znamya. In 1993, Baklanov was one of the signers of the Letter of Forty-Two. He recieved the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1997 for his novel And then came the marauders. He passed away on December 23, 2009 in Moscow, Russia at 86.
