Velma Brown Scott Robbins was born in Liberty, Texas to the late Arthur Brown, Jr. and Lettie Mae Bryant Brown on August 18, 1935. She was the third of six children born from that union.

She was reared by the late Arthur and Earby Brown due to a premature death of her biological mother. Velma confessed her hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Rev. J. W. Brent at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dayton, TX. She attended public school in Dayton, TX and graduated valedictorian from Colbert High School in the class of 1954. She was a domestic engineer for many years before obtaining her nurse technician certificate from Manpower, Inc. in
Liberty, TX. Upon completion of the program, she became employed at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, TX in 1970. She was known for her care of patients and strong work ethic. She loved them like family and often served them beyond the call of duty. For Velma, she often encouraged Brian and Susan to do something for someone daily, a lesson she learned from her father and a legacy she leaves for all. Velma retired in 1989 after 19 years of dedicated service as a nurse’s assistant. She continued to be a private caregiver to numerous patients even unto her death.

She was married to her loving husband of 31 years, Arthur Scott on October 31, 1976, until his demise on July 17, 2008. Together, Arthur and Velma helped rear Susan during her adult years, and helped rear Brian, their grandson, from birth into manhood. She married Lee Robbins on May 14, 2011. While living in Dayton, TX, she served faithfully as a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and never forgot her foundation.

Velma and Arthur moved to Baytown in 1981, then she united with Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in 1983. A church picnic or any function was not complete without her peach cobbler or potato salad. She served faithfully as a member of the Senior Mission and held the office of secretary for over 25 years. She was a charter member of the Senior Usher Board and faithful member of the Seasoned Saints. Velma was known to represent her Mission at numerous Mission Workshops as a reporter or strong supporter and likewise she served her Master at many local Usher Candlelight services. She worked in all ministries until God called her to receive her golden wings. Shortly after her premature retirement from San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Velma stayed home to take care of the pride of her life, her only grandchild, Brian Lee Fontenot until he was three. Then she returned to work as a home health sitter giving faithful and devoted love and care to the elderly. Additionally, she often cared for new teachers who needed a good home cooked meal, lots of love, sound wisdom, and a shoulder to lean on. She then adopted their families as her own.

Velma was an active member of Black Women’s Awareness Club where she sponsored and mentored young girls to become ladies. She co-sponsored her family’s Relay for Life team for over 10 years. She gave selflessly and tirelessly to her community. Velma’s dedication to mankind was her ministry. Velma was fondly called “Sister, Scotty, Nanny, Aunt Velma, or Gram” by family and friends. On June 7, 2012, God lovingly called His daughter by her Christian name and she answered His call. Befittingly, we celebrate her life of fullness, for death has not been victorious over our Sister in Christ. For Velma Brown Scott Robbins has joyfully exchanged this earthly home for her Father’s heavenly mansion.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur, Lettie Mae and Earby Brown; Arthur E. Scott, her husband of 31 years; and two brothers, Nathaniel and L.E. Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memory one biological sister, Patricia Brown Jackson (Shreveport) and surrogate sister, Ruth Goffney; brothers Roscoe Brown (Baytown) and David (Lillian) Brown (Houston), brothers-in-laws, Joe (Lelia) Scott and Stanley (Betty) Scott both of Ft.
