There was a feud between the Cobbs and the Avarys for unknown reasons. In fact, John Thames who was married to Ruth Banks Cobb, did not want his daughters to have anything to do with the Avary Boys. But, three of his daughters married three of the sons of Jesse Avary.
Luke and his father-in-law, John Thames, were roofing a house in Shelby Co. when James Cobb arrived on the scene and stabbed Luke in the heart with a knife. A relative ran to Luke and cradled his head in her lap. Luke looked up at her, smiled and died. The year was 1858. The man who murdered Luke was found "not guilty", but was later found lynched. Some of the Avary's took their families and fled to Winston Co. for refuge. After the death of her husband, Bethana S. Thames Avary married David C. Beasley on 19 Aug 1858 in Shelby Co.
It turns out that James Cobb didn't murder Luke. It was James older brother John Sanders Cobb, that killed him.
