LaVern H. Pabst, lieutenant colonel (USAF, Ret.), 87, of 108 Lullwater Road, died peacefully at his home on May 10, 2005.

Mr. Pabst was born in Gering, Neb., and was the youngest son of three children born to the late Theresa A. and Henry Pabst, a hard-working family that experienced many hardships during the early 20s and 30s. Known as "Pabst" and "Colonel", he retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1962. After making Greenville his new home upon completion of active military duty during World War II, he established Pabsts' Accounting Service that faithfully served many individuals and business clients in the Greenville area for more than 50 years.

He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour in Greenville and was an active member for 49 years. Pabst was a Church Council member, treasurer and Day School treasurer and member of the Lutheran Brotherhood at the Church.

Mr. Pabst was a member of the Masonic Lodge and recently received a 60-year membership award. Pabst was active in Shriners and was a diligent supporter of benevolent activities at the local and national level.

He served his country with distinction but was reluctant to share his demonstrated valor in combat. After earning his pilot wings in the U.S. Army Air Corps, Pabst became proficient in several World War II fighter, attack and bomber aircraft, served as an instructor pilot, and later was shot down flying a B-25 bomber on a bombing mission in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Pabst is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of the home, and was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth LeCroy Pabst. His sister, Leora R. Bentz of Loveland, Colo.; and his brother, Floyd E. Pabst of LaVerne, Calif.; preceded him in death.

He was a faithful servant and humble Christian, a kind and loving husband, a caring father and an encouragement to acquaintances and friends. Although his primary passion was loving and caring for his family, he also enjoyed fishing for catfish and striped bass, and hosting big fish fries for family and friends. He cooked the catch and prepared his hush puppy recipe, for which he will be long remembered.

Also surviving are his children and their spouses, Patricia Harrison and husband, Jim, of Little River, DeDee Wynn and husband, Doug, of Greenville, Harry Pabst and wife, Penny, of Laurens, and Deborah Marchant and husband, Tom, of Caesars Head; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Additionally, surviving stepchildren are Cindy Campbell and husband, David, of Greenville, Karen Vann of St. Petersburg, Fla., Cherie Keese of Greenville and Jeff Field of Laurens; and six stepgrandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Stack, Gordon Ross, Barnie Slice, Shelton Rimer, Gil Fairbanks and Jerry Schulz.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour today, May 13, 2005, at 11 a.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Gerald Smith and the Rev. Gary Safrit. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

The family requests flowers be omitted, with memorials made to The Building Fund, Lutheran Church of Our Saviour, 2600 Wade Hampton Blvd., Greenville, SC 29615.

The family is at the home.

The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, in Greenville, is in charge of arrangements.
