While serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the 6th United States Regular Cavalry during the wars with the Plains Indians, he played a significant role in ending the ongoing conflicts when he persuaded Chiricahua Apache Native American chief Geronimo to surrender in 1886. Born in Virginia, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1873, and was posted to the 6th Cavalry regiment. He commanded United States Army Apache scouts, served on the staff of Major General Nelson A. Miles, and led Navajo scouts in the American Southwest. During the Geronimo Campaign, he earned the respect of the Apache leaders, and after Geronimo's band had dwindled in the face of Army operations, Lieutenant Gatewood met with him and ultimately convinced him that further resistance was futile. He served until he died of stomach cancer in 1896.
